They were “Sanford and Son,” starring Redd Foxx as a bigoted black junkyard man “Maude,” with Beatrice Arthur as a phony radical chic liberal and “Bridget Loves Bernie,” which involved a “mixed” marriage and Jewish-Catholic in-laws. The “Family” format was successfully adapted by three new comedies that were in the top 10. It ended up being one of the most popular sitcoms of all time, ranking #1 from 1971 to 1975. It was 1972’s top-rated show, was watched by more than 50 million people each week and won six Emmys. ![]()
